Do You Need A Mac Laptop For Developing Ios Apps

[EDIT]I'm really surprised that this exact question was answered in other threads, but they did NOT appear in my searches OR in the list of suggestions until after I posted this...So I'm sorry if this is a duplicate.[/EDIT]

Jul 25, 2017  Another reason for the popularity of Mac gaining pace is the launch of XCode by Apple. XCode is a free-to-download program used to develop apps for iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Apple Watches. Although it can be run on Windows, with the help of a simulator, the best app development experience you can have with XCode comes from MacOS. Jun 30, 2010  Yes. I use a MacBook Pro 13'. It's not bad, but the screen is too small to do iPad development without plugging it into an external monitor. I know people who use Mac Minis for iPhone/iPad development and that works just fine for them. So if you want to get something cheap, a Mac Mini is the way to go.

Well you need to purchase the apple developer license if you want to build and test the app on your iphone/ipad and ofc to publish to the app store. XCode itself is free. Just sign in to the app store on your mac and download it and all the tools you need.

I'm about to purchase my first-ever Mac, and the choice has been narrowed down to a Macbook Pro or a Macbook Air.

Swift is a robust and intuitive programming language created by Apple for building apps for iOS, Mac, Apple TV, and Apple Watch. It’s designed to give developers more freedom than ever. Swift is easy to use and open source, so anyone with an idea can create something incredible. Even if you developed your app using something other than a Mac, you will need a Mac to compile the final product that is uploaded to the App Store. Xcode is the primary tool for macOS and iOS. Dec 17, 2019  As long as you don't have a Mac but still need to use macOS to write iOS apps, virtualization software is the simplest solution. Installed on your Windows PC, a virtual machine (VirtualBox, VMware, etc.) will provide you with the access to macOS, this way making it possible for you to develop iOS apps on Windows.

The reason I'm doing this is to help me get started developing apps for iOS. I'm not particularly interested in the other apps available for the Mac platform per se, just looking at it from a development perspective.

So my question is, can I use the development tools (Xcode, etc) on these platforms as a developer, or do I have to purchase an iMac in order to be able to get started?

I do realise there will be significant penalties for developing on a laptop as opposed to a desktop, but I have severe physical disabilities, and I need to move away from a fixed sitting position.

I have been registered as a developer, but I've been unable to source a reliable second-hand platform that isn't some kind of dodgy FrankenMac, so I decided to bite the bullet and go with a legitmate, new, platform.

Any suggestions, comments or ideas will be most welcome.

Cheers,

PC Pete

Developers are doing
great things with Swift.

Swift is a fast and efficient language that provides real-time feedback and can be seamlessly incorporated into existing Objective-C code. So developers are able to write safer, more reliable code, save time, and create even richer app experiences.

Great apps
built using Swift.

Apps

More and more developers are incorporating Swift code into their apps. And some are even building all-new apps entirely in Swift.

Better performance
equals better apps.

Swift apps more than live up to the name. For instance, a common search algorithm completes much faster using Swift.

Educators are adding Swift
to their curriculum.

Developers aren’t the only ones who’ve noticed the potential of Swift. Universities and academic institutions are teaching Swift in their computer programming courses and offering free courses on iTunes U. Which means the transition from introductory coding to professional programming has never been easier.

Colleges and universities that are incorporating Swift into their courses

  • Aberystwyth University
  • Borough of Manhattan
    Community College
  • California Polytechnic State University
  • Central Piedmont Community College
  • Foothill College
  • Full Sail University
  • Houston Community College System
  • Ingésup
  • Lawson State Community College
  • Mesa Community College
  • Northwest Kansas Technical College
  • Plymouth University
  • RMIT University
  • Southern Methodist University
  • Stanford University
  • Technical University of Munich
  • Tecnológico de Monterrey
  • University of California, Santa Cruz

Swift is everywhere.
And now it’s open for everyone.

Swift is free and open source, and it’s available to a wide audience of developers, educators, and students under the Apache 2.0 open source license. We’re providing binaries for macOS and Linux that can compile code for iOS, macOS, watchOS, tvOS, and Linux. And to help Swift grow into an even more powerful language, we created a community where users can contribute directly to the Swift source code.
